Queer Skate Baltimore

Project Statement:

Through this project, I aspire to document the relationship forged among the queer community who unite through their passion for skateboarding. As I work on this project, I hope to foster genuine connections amongst the queer skateboarding community in Baltimore. Through the lens of photography, I aspire to be able to narrate the collective experience of being queer in creative spaces, such as skateboarding and photography, that have been historically dominated by cisgender males.

Skateboarding has been and will continue to be a revolutionary act against the norm and today, is experiencing a revolution of its own. With a growing community of all demographics, this is a welcome shift from the transphobic, homophobic and sexist male dominated space that has been present since the beginning.

I aim to be able to represent the resilience and power in the queer community, and to support those who believe they don't fit the stereotype, and that skateboarding is a place for all. This project not only serves in bringing visibility to the queer community, but also to represent the strength and dedication to push the boundaries and to break down the stigma in skateboarding, all with the hope of creating a more inclusive space.
